Let's flash back to my senior year of college.
I was nominated to audition to give the commencement speech for my business school by the director of the Economics department. I was shocked because although I accomplished some major things throughout my college career, I definitely wasn't "commencement speech" material.
After getting over the initial shock, I had to write the speech. What in the hell was I going to say? I had no clue. So I did what I usually do whenever I'm faced with a task that I am not inspired to complete...
I ignored it.
The day of the audition came, and I finally settled on a topic. I wanted to explore the idea of introductions. In college, introductions were always centered around your name and major.
Hi, my name is <insert name> and I'm majoring in <insert major>.
If you went to college, I bet you can't count how many times you gave that introduction throughout your college career.
As college seniors, we were getting ready to enter into another season of introductions that would look something like this:
Hi my name is <insert name> and I am a <insert job title> at <insert company name>.
This introduction was equally as boring. But what if it didn't have to be? What if we had the power to introduce ourselves the way we wanted the world to see us? Spoiler alert, we do. This was pretty much the premise of my entire speech. Deep right? I know. #StayWoke.
Well, like with most things in life... I didn't get picked.
However, the beautiful thing about this experience is that I'm actually living that speech now. When I moved all the way from Arkansas to Minnesota, no one knew who I was. I took this as an opportunity to reintroduce myself. First I started going by my first and middle name instead of my first and last name. Simple: Hi, I'm Brittney Keoka.
But then, I got tired of getting invited to cool events with nothing cool to say. Everyone else had "cool" job titles, and dammit I wanted one too. So instead of telling people that I worked for company XYZ, I told them I was a DJ.
At the time, THIS WAS A COMPLETE LIE. I never had a gig, never took a class, never even touched a turntable, but they didn't know that. All they knew was that there was a new face in town, and connected to this face was a girl with an eclectic style who claimed to be a DJ. Hi me.
What I noticed was the more and more I introduced myself as a DJ, the more and more I felt compelled to learn how to DJ. Crazy right? So I did. And here we are now, but that's not how the story ends.
Today, I would like to reintroduce myself... again. Hi, my name is Brittney Keoka and I am a vibe curator. We will unpack what a "vibe curator" is in a future post, but for now, I need you all to trust me. That's what I am.
I really hope that you take the time to introduce yourself to the world. Who you are claiming to be doesn't have to be true in that moment (even though, I encourage you to make it believable) just as long as you promise to actually work on becoming that person you want to be. You have the power to become whomever you want. Don't miss out on this opportunity.
I look forward to meeting you soon!
